Mercedes-Benz models are some of the most luxurious and recognizable vehicles on the market. However, drivers may also be confused about what the series names mean. Why does the Mercedes-Benz GLC have those three letters? What do they mean?

It turns out that Mercedes-Benz series names do have meaning. So, the next time you are shopping for a Mercedes-Benz model here in Sioux Falls, SD, you can keep these meanings in mind.

  • Mercedes-Benz vehicles have five core models. You may recognize some of them. They are A, B, C, E, and S. If you notice extra letters are added, like with the Mercedes-Benz CLS, it may indicate a specific type of that core model. So, for example, the Mercedes-Benz CLS uses the letters CL to indicate it is a four-door coupe. Similarly, the Mercedes-Benz CLA indicates the same thing.

  • Some Mercedes-Benz models utilize the “GL” prefix – the Mercedes-Benz GLS, or the Mercedes-Benz GLC, for instance. That GL prefix indicates that the model is an SUV.

  • Other Mercedes-Benz models have an “SL” prefix. This includes vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz SLC and the Mercedes-Benz SL. This prefix indicates that the vehicle is a “Roadster” model, which generally offer a hardtop convertible roof and are two-seater cars.
