Our ABRA Auto Body & Glass team just completed a project that can only be described as fulfilling, the “feel good” kind of project.  Working with State Farm and other local businesses, we repaired and prepared a donated vehicle for the Recycled Rides Program.

This program is unique in which auto body industry professionals collaborate to repair and donate vehicles to deserving individuals and service organizations in local communities throughout the country.

A lot of us take transportation for granted.  But for many people, necessary traveling such as going to work, taking kids to school, grocery shopping and medical visits are a challenge.  One small moment of unforeseen circumstances can suddenly change lives and make it difficult to get back to stability.

Recycled Rides has helped donate over 1,300 vehicles valued over $17 million to local communities across the country.  In Sioux Falls, Mike has become the latest recipient of a Recycle Ride to help provide him opportunities and enrich his quality of life.

A word from Mike:

I lost my job in 2011 when the company I worked for moved out of the state. Economy was still struggling and at my age couldn't find employment. After going through my savings and 401k I was about to be evicted and become homeless. I entered the Grant and Per Diem Program for Vets who are homeless or about to become homeless. The great staff at the Veterans Outreach Center of the Volunteers of America, Dakotas helped to guide and navigate me to the necessary job skills I needed to regain employment. I had to let my vehicle go earlier before entering the program because of expenses, and I’ve been lucky to be able to use the local transit system for free because I'm a vet. The problem began with a circulation issue in my legs due to diabetes. Walking any distance of a couple blocks or more, especially while carrying weight, is extremely painful and burdensome. Having a vehicle for transportation to and from work, and to alleviate the painful burden of getting groceries and doing laundry will be a blessing. This wonderful charity offer would eliminate a great deal of discomfort and anxiety in my daily life. Thank you.  - Mike Landon

This was a rewarding project that created excitement and pride for all the businesses involved including State Farm Insurance, Nordstrom’s Automotive, PPG Paints, Auto Body Specialties, Weisser Distributing, Luxury Auto Mall of Sioux Falls and Sioux Falls Ford Lincoln.  What a perfect example of what it means to be #SiouxFallsNice!
